Major Changes in NEET UG 2025

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has introduced several key modifications in the exam process this year. These changes affect multiple aspects, including registration, eligibility, exam pattern, scoring system, and exam centers.

1. Application Procedure Updates

Initially, candidates were required to update their Aadhaar credentials and integrate their APAAR ID for registration. However, this requirement was later removed to simplify and expedite the application process.

2. Eligibility Criteria Changes

  • Age Limit: Candidates must be at least 17 years old by December 31, 2025. There is no upper age limit.
  • NRI & Foreign Students:
    • To apply under the NRI quota, candidates must be non-resident Indians (NRIs) with parents or legal guardians residing abroad.
    • A valid passport and supporting documents confirming NRI status are required.
    • Candidates must meet the same qualification criteria as domestic applicants.
  • Academic Qualifications:
    • Candidates must have passed Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as core subjects.
    • Minimum aggregate required:
      • General category: 50%
      • Reserved categories (SC/ST/OBC): 40%

3. Exam Pattern Changes

  • The optional Paper B questions have been removed, reverting to the pre-COVID pattern.
  • Total Questions: 180 (instead of 200)
  • Exam Duration: Reduced from 200 minutes to 180 minutes
  • Mode of Examination: Pen-and-paper format
  • Single-day, single-shift examination

4. Exam Centers

Candidates must select three cities for their exam centers, but they must be within the state of their permanent or current address.

5. Syllabus Updates

There are no changes in the NEET UG 2025 syllabus compared to last year. The updated syllabus has been published on the NTA’s official website.

6. Scoring & Ranking System Adjustments

A revised tie-breaking system has been introduced. If two or more candidates obtain the same score, ranking will be determined in the following order:

  1. Higher marks in Biology
  2. Higher marks in Chemistry
  3. Higher marks in Physics
  4. Fewer overall errors
  5. Fewer incorrect responses in Biology
  6. Fewer incorrect responses in Chemistry
  7. Fewer incorrect responses in Physics

If the tie persists after these criteria, an independent expert committee will conduct a random selection process to finalize rankings.

These updates are aimed at streamlining the examination process and ensuring a fair assessment system for all candidates.
