NExT Exam 2025 for MBBS Latest Updates, Dates, Exam Pattern, Syllabus
The NeXT exam for MBBS will come into effect from August next year. The NeXT exam MBBS will replace the current NEET PG and FMGE tests for medical courses at the postgraduate level. The full form is the National Exit Test and the NeXT mock test scheduled for the 28th of July has also been cancelled. It is now expected to come into effect next year itself. The test will thus be an easy gateway to obtain the license for practicing medicine in India.
NExT Latest Updates
- The NeXT exam NEET PG will be implemented from August, 2025 (most likely) for the Step 1
- Step 2 will take place sometime in February, 2026, as per reports
- The examination is supposed to be valid for MBBS students from the batch of 2020 onwards
- It will also be held twice every year in May and November, and the conducting body will most likely be AIIMS, New Delhi
- There will be the practical and theory tests
- Registration for the NeXT exam mock test began on 28th June at aiimsexams.ac.in
- The last date for the mock application form submission was the 10th of July
- However, it was later cancelled by the NMC
What is the National Exit Test (NExT)?
The NeXT exam or National Exit Test will be held for admission to post-graduate courses after MBBS. It will be a licentiate examination that will be mandatory for undergraduate medical students to practice in India. Those qualifying MBBS in the country or even from abroad will have to clear this test for registration with the MCI (Medical Council of India). The test will be held by AIIMS Delhi twice every year. NExT Mock Exam
The NeXT exam mock test registration was initiated on the 28th of June by AIIMS. Candidates were required to submit their application forms with basic information and get the EUC (Exam Unique Code) by the 10th of July. However, it was eventually cancelled, with further announcements awaited.
NExT Exam (National Exit Test) Process
The NeXT exam process involves the following:
- NeXT 1- theoretical paper (those qualifying will be eligible for the internship and Step 2)
- NeXT 2- practical examination
- Step 1 will be computer-based with 540 MCQs (including six papers covering subjects of the final/third year MBBS course, Part 1 and 2). Those completing this year from a recognized medical college can appear in the test
- The examination will take place once every year before the University Practical Examination for the III MBBS (Part 2)/Final MBBS preceding
- NeXT Step 1 supplementary examinations will take place once every year and those failing in one or more of the six subjects may appear
- There are no restrictions on the number of attempts with the condition that candidates should pass Step 1 within 10 years of joining the MBBS program
- Step 2 will be a clinical/practical and viva-based examination and will take place live/in person courtesy of the respective health universities/institutions of states
- It will have seven clinical disciplines/subjects and will have simulated patients/cases and clinical decision-making aspects involved

NExT Exam Eligibility Criteria
- Undergraduate medical students can apply (those pursuing MBBS from NMC-approved medical colleges)
- Foreign medical graduates with NMC approval are eligible to appear
- Any other person with a medical degree for academic courses/observership/other purposes as specified may be eligible
NExT 2025 Application Form
The NeXT exam application form is expected to be released before the official examination next year in August, as per reports. The NMC/AIIMS may release the form soon with announcements expected for registration in the last week or month of 2024.

NExT Exam Pattern
- NeXT 1 theory paper will be held in online mode
- NeXT 2 will be a practical/viva paper held in the offline mode
- NeXT 1 will have 540 MCQs and those clearing it will be eligible for internship programs and Step 2 (at least 50% marks required)
- Both NeXT 1 and 2 have to be cleared for PG course admission
- Score of the first paper will be valid for two years to qualify for the second paper
- The marks will be calculated as whole numbers, which will be the raw scores and corresponding percentages will be calculated if needed
- NeXT 2 results will only be declared as fail/pass based on the evaluation of suitable competence of candidates
NExT Qualifying Criteria
Candidates will have to score the minimum cut off marks for qualifying. The minimum marks will be 50% or half of the maximum possible raw score for NeXT Step 1. The criteria for Step 2 will be the satisfactory demonstration of required competencies and the result will be Pass/Fail.

The cuff off will be 50% for the NeXT 1 examination. The second paper will only have Pass or Fail as the result.
