Duration of MBBS: Bachelor of Surgery, Bachelor of Medicine is a major undergraduate course to become a doctor. Since it develops students from scratch, it consists of a 6-year MBBS course. Although some countries conduct a 5-year course. These courses come with a compulsory internship to get hands-on experience.

Duration of BDS: Like MBBS, even BDS consists of a 6-year course including an internship but come countries and universities complete the course in 5 years. BDS courses can be undertaken full-time as well as part-time.

Duration of BAMS: Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery completes its course in 5y ears to 6 years. This degree programme includes a year of the compulsory internship programme with hands-on practical training.

Duration of BHMS: This course of Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery is completed within 5.5 -years containing a year of the internship programme. They provide live practical training and 4.5 years of academic sessions.

What are the career opportunities for MBBS, BDS, BAMS and BHMS?

There is a wide range of career options after MBBS like speciality doctor, physician, or surgeon. There is also other fields where you can practice medicine like research scientists and even a medical professor or lecturer.

A career after BDS has its limits but within the field, there are a variety of specialities. The Bachelor of Dental Surgery programme will open doors to a career like a dentist and a dental and oral surgeon. Other types of dental careers are endodontic, oral and maxillofacial pathologist, orthodontic, and pedodontics, to name a few.

What are the higher education options after MBBS, BDS, BAMS and BHMS?

There are several higher education options after MBBS, BDS, BAMS and BHMS. Post MBBS, you can apply for MS which is a postgraduate in general surgery or MD, a postgraduate in general medicine. Similar to sitting for NEET-UG, you have to appear for the NEET-PG.

After completing your BDS, a Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) is the next step in pursuing dentistry. For this, you need to sit for an AIPGDEE entrance exam (All India Post Graduate Dental Entrance Exam) which is a national-level exam.

You can go for an MD or MS after completing BAMS. The graduates can also pursue other medical disciplines. Some of the best options include a master’s in public health, a master’s in health administration, and post graduate diploma in emergency medicine. 

The popular higher education option after BHMS is MD in Homeopathy. There are other options after graduating from BHMS like the master of science in regenerative medicine, master of science in psychiatry, master of science in endocrinology and master of hospital management.

It depends upon what profession you want to get into. While MBBS is an overall study of humans, BDS only focuses on a certain part of the body. It is the study of dental health. BDS can be a suitable course if you wish to focus on one field and specialise in this area from the start.

BAMS and BHMS, both have a competitive salary package. However, due to the popularity of ayurvedic in India, it has a better salary package. You can expect a starting salary package of INR. 40,000 to Rs. 60,000 per month.

The graduates of BAMS cannot do major surgeries. But they are taught to perform abscess draining, surgical excision, OT procedures etc.
